Kununurra Youth Join Ultimate Challenge

Earlier in March, two Kununurra youth and one carer boarded the Leeuwin Ultimate Challenge in Fremantle, a week-long voyage specifically catering to youth with physical, sensory or intellectual limitations.

Traveling from the Kimberley, Christopher Cardell from Kununurra (20), Lieuwe Ynema from Wyndam (21) and carer David Thorncroft from Kununurra were funded to board the voyage through the Kimberley Aged and Community Services.

The voyage which ran from 8 – 12 March included 27 young people with limitations and support participants.

These participants had the opportunity to experience the thrill of sailing a tall ship for five days along Perth’s coastline – in a safe, fun and supportive environment.

Jennifer Kelly, Carer Support Coordinator at the Kimberley Aged and Community Services comments on the success of the voyage.

“We would like to thank the Sail Leeuwin team and Sponsors, it’s wonderful that these young men can participate in a once in a life time opportunity,” she said.

“Coming from a remote area these opportunities rarely come along, being able to make new friends and long lasting memories is very special to both them and their families.”
