New Captain a Leeuwin loyal
Angela Lewis has stepped into the role of Master of STS Leeuwin II, after an impressive 18 year commitment to the sail training organisation Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Foundation.
The appointment follows the departure of previous Captain, Sarah Robinson, who recently left the not for profit organisation after serving as Captain for 11 years. Her departure was bittersweet, with Sarah moving into her dream role as a Marine Pilot at the Southern Ports Authority.
“I am delighted to confirm the appointment of Capt. Sarah Robinson to the marine team, in the role of Trainee Marine Pilot,” said Capt. Les Turner, Harbour Master at the Port of Bunbury.
“Sarah comes to the port with many years’ experience as Master of the STS Leeuwin II, and brings her knowledge and experience to a small, tight knit team of Marine Pilots. Primarily involved with the safe and efficient movement of large ocean going ships, in and out of the port, Sarah will also be involved in scheduling ship movements and liaising with stakeholders at the port.”
Leeuwin Ocean Adventure CEO, Carol Shannon is incredibly proud to have watched Angela grow at Leeuwin over the years and is delighted with her appointment as Master.
“We are very fortunate to have had Sarah as our Captain leading the sail training program on board STS Leeuwin for so many years – she has inspired and had a direct impact on thousands of young peoples’ lives,” Carol said.
“I am delighted that Angela has taken on the role as Captain – she has undoubtedly earned the opportunity. She is hard working and an excellent leader, always willing to share her knowledge with those around her.”
Angela started her Leeuwin Ocean Adventure career as a voyage trainee on a Leeuwin Youth Explorer Voyage back in 2002. Since then, she has continued to build her skills and knowledge, first volunteering at Leeuwin for many years and then holding the roles of Bosun’s Mate, Trainee Watch Leader, Watch Leader, Program Facilitator, Bosun, First Mate and now Captain.
“My Leeuwin experience has been life changing. I started on a Youth Explorer Voyage as a 14 year old girl with no self confidence. On that voyage, and over the years, Leeuwin has helped build me up to a point where I have made sail training into a career,” said Angela.
“I’m excited about the challenge ahead. I’m looking forward to continuing to work closely with the permanent crew and getting more involved in the management of the ship and sail training program.”
“What I love about my job is the people I work with – some of the people I helped train as cadets are now standing next to me as crew members,” said Angela.
Angela attributed much of her success to former Captain Sarah Robinson among others.
“Sarah has been a fantastic mentor. She’s had the biggest hand in training me from a volunteer crew member up to being Captain – I certainly wouldn’t be here without her. She is a fantastic and patient teacher and excellent mentor over the last 10 years.”
