CUNDERDIN LIONS CLUB OFFERS LOCAL YOUTH CHRISTMAS GIFT

This month, Abigail Caneda (15) Cunderdin District High School student boarded the STS Leeuwin II thanks to a full sponsorship from the Cunderdin Lions Club.

Abigail was one of 30 young people (aged 14 – 25) who took to the sea for a week-long adventure from 29 November – 5 December 2017.

In an ongoing show of support, Cunderdin Lions Club fully sponsored one youth to experience a Leeuwin voyage, in which they are part of all onboard activities including setting and furling the sails, taking the helm or climbing the 33m main mast.

The award-winning youth development program assists young people in skills in communication, teamwork and leadership, helping to further their opportunities when entering the workforce and striving for higher goals in the future.

Digby Willmott from the Cunderdin Lions Club talks about the ongoing support offered to the Leeuwin by the club.

“The Cunderdin Lions Club values the continued relationship with the Leeuwin Ocean Adventure and being able to give local country youth the opportunity to experience something completely different to living in a small country town,” he said.

“The Club looks forward to providing other local youth the same opportunity Abigail had in experiencing an ocean adventure,” he said.

Abigail tells what she most enjoyed about the experience.

“There were many news things. The most challenging was climbing the masts because my legs are a bit short,” she said.

“I also learnt valuable life lessons as well. I improved my teamwork skills a lot and also had a go living with strangers. This will surely help me get through life.”

“I would like to express my eternal gratitude for sponsoring me for the STS Leeuwin II voyage. This voyage was filled with completely new experiences and lessons for me,” she said.

The Leeuwin Ocean Adventure is funded through the sale of voyages, a combination of grants, corporate sponsorships and donations by organisations and the general public.
