AngloGold Ashanti sponsors students for life-changing sailing adventure

Ten Kalgoorlie-Boulder students set sail from Fremantle to Geraldton last month aboard WA’s only sail training tall ship, the STS Leeuwin II.

AngloGold Ashanti Australia Ltd, which operates the Sunrise Dam and Tropicana (70%) gold mines in the Goldfields, sponsored the Eastern Goldfields College students to join the once-in-a-lifetime voyage experience. The generous sponsorship covered all travel costs to and from Kalgoorlie, voyage fares and Leeuwin sailing apparel including sailing gloves and a new sleeping bag.

The voyage departed from Fremantle on 8 April, with all voyage trainees encouraged to get out of their comfort zone and test their personal limits. Sail training is an adventure activity which requires participants to confront many demanding challenges, both physical and emotional, inspiring self-confidence and the acceptance of personal responsibility. Voyage participation promotes an acceptance of others whatever their social or cultural backgrounds, and develops a willingness to take controlled risks.

“It is inspiring to hear about the special experiences of the students who participate in this unique programme. AngloGold Ashanti recognises the valuable opportunities Eastern
Goldfields College and Leeuwin are providing for young people and is delighted to provide support,” says Michael Erickson, Senior Vice President Australia, AngloGold Ashanti.

Jamal Harrison (16) said he applied for the Leeuwin voyage wanting to build strong relationships with his peers and develop new skills.

“I want to further develop my leadership skills on Leeuwin so I can teach others and help them improve.”

Cheyanne Prestedge (16) said she was grateful for the AngloGold Ashanti sponsorship as it has provided her with an opportunity to do something she’s never done before.

“Sailing on Leeuwin is an experience I will cherish for a long time, as well as the new friends I have made on board. It’s helped me develop my communication and leadership skills which I will use in the future and in my current job.”

Leeuwin Ocean Adventure’s Chief Executive Officer, Carol Shannon says AngloGold Ashanti’s voyage sponsorship gives students an extraordinary opportunity that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.

“This is the third year AngloGold Ashanti has so generously sponsored students from Eastern Goldfields College onto Leeuwin Ocean Adventure voyages. Working together we know we’re making a difference to young lives, building their courage to make good decisions about their futures and the confidence to achieve their goals,” said Carol.
