Geraldton Student Conquers Voyage of a Lifetime

Last month, Shianne Brockman (14) from Geraldton received funding assistance from the Geoffrey Evans Fund and Geraldton Regional Aboriginal Medical Services (GRAMS) to board a Leeuwin voyage – the adventure of a lifetime.

The Leeuwin Foundation aim to enrich the lives of young people through adventure, participation and challenge onboard Western Australia’s very own tall ship, the STS Leeuwin II.

Shianne, who attends John Willcock College, participated in a week-long youth development voyage from 21 to 27 October and explains what she loved about the experience.

“This voyage has been a great experience and was pretty awesome because it was actually my first time on a ship ever,” Shianne said.

“It was a privilege to do this as I really got out of my comfort zone”.

Throughout the voyage participants are involved in all onboard activities, including working aloft, cleaning the deck, participating in night watch and climbing the 33m main mast.

The STS Leeuwin II will be in Geraldton numerous times in 2018:

Voyage 1808: Fremantle to Geraldton, 10 – 16 April
Voyage 1809: Geraldton to Monkey Mia, 21 – 25 April FAMILY VOYAGE
Voyage 1810: Monkey Mia to Geraldton, 3- 10 June OPEN AGED VOYAGE
Voyage 1811: Geraldton to Fremantle, 15 – 21 June

The Foundation are funded through a combination of grants, corporate sponsorships and donations by organisations and the general public.

Two scholarship opportunities are currently open for Geraldton youth.

Woodside Marine Career scholarships are available to WA youth (aged 14 – 25) who have an interest in a marine career or maritime industry.

In partnership with the CBH Group, Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Foundation has opened applications for a scholarship for a week-long adventure onboard the STS Leeuwin II.

Applicants must be between the ages of 14 – 25 years and in one of the five grain growing zones in which CBH Group operates. Download the scholarship applications forms. CBH Group applications close 30 November 2017.
