Regional and Metropolitan schools come together for the first Leeuwin voyage to the Northwest in over 10 years.
In July, STS Leeuwin II set sail on its first voyage north of Monkey Mia in over 10 years. Onboard this particularly special adventure were 35 students from Dongara DHS, Champion Bay SHS in Geraldton, Kalbarri DHS, Shark Bay DHS, Morawa DHS, St Mary Star of the Sea in Carnarvon, and schools from across the Perth metropolitan area. The students formed four tight-knit teams to sail from Monkey Mia to Exmouth. Eligible voyage trainees received voyage sponsorships from Woodside Energy and many were supported through the generosity of Leeuwin Ocean Adventure’s donors.
The teams learnt how to tie the ropes, climb the masts, and set the sails. These activities give our young voyagers the opportunity to make new friendships, develop leadership and teamwork skills for their futures, and explore a career in the marine or maritime industries. The trip was topped off with a perfect shore day on Serrurier Island. Here’s what they had to say!
