Albany students to set sail thanks to City of Albany

The STS Leeuwin II is returning to the Great Southern region for the first time in nearly ten years and local students Grace Larham and Jacobus le Grange are looking forward to jumping on board!

The City of Albany have generously provided part sponsorship for two young people from the Albany region to take part in the Leeuwin voyage arriving into, or departing from, Albany Port in January 2019.

Successful applicants Grace Larham and Jacobus le Grange will participate in a week-long experience provided by Leeuwin Ocean Adventure, an award-winning provider of youth development programs. During the week-long trip on board the STS Leeuwin II, the two students will sharpen their work-ready skills and develop their communication, leadership and collaboration skills.

Jacobus said receiving the sponsorship was a real confidence boost, and that he was looking forward to meeting new people and making new friends on board the Leeuwin.

I’m in the Army Cadets and next year I want to do marine and maritime studies. I think it’s important to develop my communication, teamwork and leadership skills for my current job and future career.

I am very thankful for this sponsorship – I think it’s a once in a lifetime experience, said Jacobus

Grace is eager to get out of her comfort zone when she sets sail on the Leeuwin’s Southern Spirit Youth Explorer Voyage in January 2019.

I can be quite shy and indecisive, and often end up regretting or wishing I did something different. I believe the Leeuwin will help me become a more courageous and confident
leader.

I believe this experience will take me out of my comfort zone and push my limits so I can grow as an individual and help others around me, said Grace.

Albany Mayor Dennis Wellington said the City of Albany was proud to be providing development opportunities for the youth of Albany.

The City of Albany is committed to creating a more friendly and welcoming community for our young people.

We want to recognise and value the contribution they make to our community and partnering with Leeuwin is a way for us to do this.

Congratulations to Grace and Jacobus and best of luck on your adventure, Mayor Wellington said.
